So you’d thing that we, as professional organizers, would always tell you you have too much stuff. Well, think again! Ok, so we might think that everyone could get rid of at least a few things, but often enough, we find the challenge is a combination of things.
For some, the real issue is a lack of storage, particularly the RIGHT KIND of storage in the RIGHT PLACE. Whoever built your house or apartment didn’t know you or how you live. Ok, so a few of you built a custom home with everything just like you like it … for the other 99% of the population, this is a true statement. When people see my closet, they're usually pretty envious (or they think I'm OCD, which might have some element of truth). A big part of why it's so organized is that I built it knowing what I needed to put in it, so everything has a place and enough room. It's not that I got rid of lots of my clothes, far from it … I have lots of clothes and shoes (yet nothing to wear!) but I also have lots of shelving and hanging space.
The good news is, you might not have to get rid of more than you want to. Consider adding storage in rooms that don't have enough, or retrofit the storage you do have to suit what you have. Like anything, it’s a process. Start by figuring out how much “stuff” you need (or want), then figure out where it should be stored so that it's convenient to you. Once that's done, look for ways to add the right kind of storage to add where you need it. Note of caution at this stage, shelves aren't always the answer. Make sure you have enough drawers and enclosed storage to keep all the smaller (and messier looking) contained.
